Our Approach

Human interactions and response to built environments are often an afterthought in engineering design. In our lab, the impact of the built environment on humans is central to our engineering work. Our goal is to unite a variety of experimental methods with engineering and architectural design, to better understand how our designs and decisions impact human wellbeing.

About Us

We are a diverse, collaborative group that enjoys taking a team-science approach to our projects. We welcome students and external partners to join us in our work.

Our Research

We use quantitative and qualitative approaches to understand how the built environment impacts people. We design interventions and adaptations to support human wellbeing.

Publications

We share our work through publications in peer-reviewed journals as well as workshop and conference proceedings. Dive in and learn more about our approaches and findings!

Why this work matters

Humans spend up to 90% of their time indoors.

Historically, buildings were designed to provide a shelter for humans’ physical safety, with little to no consideration of their psychological response. We are working to change this.

Our team studies the built features that promote positive physical, psychological, social, cognitive outcomes, and nurture wellbeing for occupants. Our goal is to build smarter, more sustainable spaces that do better for people.
