How much nature do we need?

Dr. Eva Bianchi and Prof. Sarah Billington recently published a new paper in Sustainable Cities and Society titled “How much nature do we need? An exploration of dose-response relationships between indoor nature dose and building occupant well-being.” The paper focuses on quantifying how much indoor nature is needed to achieve desired wellbeing outcomes for building occupants related to stress, sense of belonging, and restoration.

The research uses the Nature View Potential (NVP) tool developed by Dr. Bianchi to quantify indoor nature in eleven rendered building models and finds that NVP scores of 20-30% are optimal for well-being, while high doses of nature (i.e., 60%) may trigger stress. We are excited about the implications of this work in supporting sustainable, human-centered building design!
