Antonio presents collaborative work at the Urban Affairs Association (UAA) Conference

The title of Antonio’s talk was Identifying Racial Code Words in Public Perceptions of Affordable Housing. The talk focused on the application of a racial meaning decoding tool developed by session organizer Prof. Deidre Pfeiffer (ASU, Sociology) and Prof. Xiaoqian Hu (U. Arizona, Law) to open-ended text responses from our lab’s nationally diverse survey (N = 534) of public perceptions of affordable housing (Douglas, Chan, et al., 2024 and Douglas, Skillicorn et al., 2024).

The presentation made the case that the racial decoding tool could help housing advocates identify and address racially coded opposition which, if translated into policy, may violate fair housing law. The paper resulting from this work is currently under review.
